The Rochebrune ski area is reached by the Rochebrune gondola from the pedestrianised central square of Megeve or by cable car from the Rochebrune station, a five-minute walk up the hill. Plenty to choose from: Surrounded by Alpine peaks and wild flowers, once abandoned farming huts have been converted into cool, ultramodern holiday cabins. The Rochebrune area has long pistes, some among fir forests, and a challenging part at l’Alpette. Then, from April, the town will play host to an international dance festival, the DanceSport Open.
A huge sports complex and ice skating rink is perfect at the end of a long days skiing, or for those who do not ski. Because of the low altitude, snow cover can be unreliable. Skiers with the patience to deal with slow, awkward connections have a wide immense range of runs to try.
Down in the town, good eating is easy to come by; both Flocons de Sel and have been awarded multiple Michelin stars. The Evasion skipass also includes nearby Les Contamines km pistes but you would need a car to get there.
Experts have more limited opportunities locally although of course the proximity of the world’s tough skiing mecca – Mont Blanc – means you’re never far from the terrain you want in this category. This pretty and chic village is paved with cobble stones and automobile circulation is banned, to the great pleasure of all that come to ski and shop in well known boutiques found in famous cities around the world.
